Steam Next Fest's October edition put thousands of free demos in players' hands

Steam Next Fest is back for its October edition, and the pitch is simple: try games before they launch, for free, and tell the developers what you think. Valve says the event opened with thousands of free demos available, giving players a huge catalogue of unreleased games to sample in a single week.

Next Fest runs three times a year, in February, June, and October, as Valve's way of spotlighting games that have not yet reached release. Developers from around the world share playable demos, and players who wishlist a favourite after trying it can follow that game's road to its official Steam launch. The festival is therefore as much a discovery tool as a demo reel, connecting early impressions with the eventual release.

This edition also changes how players browse the festival. Valve says it has adjusted the fest's navigation to make finding the right demo easier, with searching now possible by genre, theme, feature, and even sub-category. A welcome video included with the announcement walks players through the updated navigation, so the sheer size of the demo list is less overwhelming than it might first appear.

The October 2026 edition ran through October 26 at 10 a.m. Pacific, closing out a week of free trials, livestreams, and developer interaction. For players who missed a demo they liked, the wishlist remains the thread to pull: it keeps that unreleased game on their radar until launch day arrives.
