Avatar Legends gets its biggest update yet with the Avatar State Patch

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has received its largest update so far. The Avatar State Patch is out now on Xbox Series X|S, and it touches almost every part of the game, from how it looks to how its fighters play.

The headline additions are two fighters rebuilt around their most powerful forms. Avatar Aang joins in his Avatar State form, drawing on the strength of the Avatars who came before him. The team behind the game designed him to feel imposing and deliberate, with a new top-level super that calls on Avatar Roku, and a signature move that lifts him into a sphere of air.

Nightmare Korra is the darker counterpart. She is based on the troubled version of Korra that haunted her in the series, and her new design leans into that uneasy presence, with chains on both wrists and slow, dragging movement that can suddenly burst into fast chain attacks and teleports. Her finishing technique is built around that transformation, and instead of losing health over time as an early idea had it, she simply starts matches with a smaller health pool.

Away from the new fighters, the whole presentation has been reworked. Menus, character selection, stage selection and the display shown during matches have all been redesigned. The update also adds Ranked Mode 2.0, along with new learning tools and quality-of-life improvements for story, versus and online play, and a fresh difficulty and tutorial setup for players still learning the game.

Balance is the other big piece. Every fighter on the roster has been adjusted, not just the two new arrivals. The developers point to examples such as Azula's stance move tracking opponents more closely, and Sokka gaining a way to chain sword hits into a boomerang throw once he has landed enough of them.

There is also a vote for what comes next. Players who pre-ordered the game or bought the Deluxe Edition can help choose the final fighter for the Year 1 Pass. Iroh, Ty Lee, Lin Beifong and Bolin are already confirmed for that set, with the fifth spot decided by the vote.

The game launched earlier this year with 12 fighters drawn from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, and the developers describe this patch as the version of the game they originally set out to make.
