Back to the Beginning: Ancestors Returns on Current Consoles This December

OFFICIAL Written by GPN · Nov 1, 2026, 8:41 PM ET · Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey · Gaming

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 8, 2026, publisher Fictions and developer Panache Digital Games have announced.

The new versions mark the game's first appearance on a Nintendo platform, and its move to current-generation consoles after its original release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019. It is a third-person, open-world survival game built around evolution, in which players guide a lineage of early hominins, learn from their surroundings and pass knowledge down through generations.

The December release adds documentary-style narration, a feature-rich photo mode and a range of quality-of-life improvements, alongside full optimisation for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The same additions are also coming to the PC version as a free update.

Existing owners on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will receive a free upgrade to the matching current-generation version, while the older console versions will remain available. That approach means returning players do not have to buy the game again to see the updated release.

For newcomers, the December launch is a chance to try one of the more unusual survival games of recent years, now with a clearer presentation and a set of modern conveniences layered over its original, unforgiving design.
