Sword of the Sea launched on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on October 29, 2026, extending the reach of Giant Squid's atmospheric adventure beyond its original PlayStation 5 and PC release on August 19, 2025.
Players take on the role of the Wraith, a figure travelling across a dried-out world on a Hoversword, a board-like device that lets them glide at speed over sand, ice and water. The journey moves through deserts, glaciers and shimmering seas toward a ruined Necropolis, with the wider goal of restoring a lost ocean to the land.
Movement is the point as much as exploration. The Hoversword is built for fast, flowing travel inspired by skateboarding and snowboarding, and the game asks players to read the terrain, build momentum and enjoy the ride between moments of discovery.
The project comes from Giant Squid, the studio behind ABZU and The Pathless, with creative direction from Matt Nava and music by Austin Wintory. On the new platforms it is published by Fictions, the publisher formerly known as Private Division, whose official site now lists Sword of the Sea among its current games.
For players who missed the first release, the Switch 2 and Xbox versions offer a fresh way in, with the same desert-as-ocean world now playable on two more consoles.
