World War Z's Waves of Lead Update Brings The Walking Dead to Extinction Mode

World War Z has received its Waves of Lead update, which arrived on October 5, 2026 with a batch of free content for the co-op zombie shooter. The headline addition takes the game's toughest test into crossover territory, as the episode based on The Walking Dead becomes playable in Extinction Mode for the first time.

The update adds two weapons, each with its own perks: a tier-three firearm, the Bullpup Shotgun BSG-12, and a new heavy melee weapon, the Gas Pipe Wrench. Six new heavy weapon perks join them, one per heavy weapon, covering the chainsaw, machine gun, MGL, heavy assault shotgun, payload rifle and multi-shot rocket launcher.

Five new mutators change how runs play out. One makes leg shots more damaging while weakening hits elsewhere, another makes explosions cause bleeding, a third slowly drains ammunition while a player is grabbed, a fourth can leave equipment crates booby-trapped, and a fifth equalises the health of survivors and zombies at one point each while allowing unlimited revives in Horde mode. Three unlockable portrait frames are also up for grabs, rewarding players for finishing off Infectors, healing allies and dealing with Bombers.

Weekly challenges get fresh setups in the update, and a new Valhalla Raider weapon skin pack offers runic steel looks for five weapons: the Geist 17MP, ARK-103, BSG-12, Paladin LMG and Taiga-12. A set of fixes lands alongside the new content, including a correction to the virus sample bonus after Extinction Mode and a fix for kill counts doubling when using the drone.
