How Sucker Punch brought Jin Sakai back for Ghost of Yōtei's Most Wanted

Sucker Punch has pulled back the curtain on one of Ghost of Yōtei's most talked-about additions: Jin Sakai, the hero of Ghost of Tsushima, returning as a playable character in the game's Most Wanted mode. In a new behind-the-scenes post, the team explains that bringing Jin back was never going to be a half measure — if he was coming back, all of him was coming back.

Most Wanted is built around challenge and mastery in a replayable, class-based roguelike format, giving players a way to experience the game's combat from perspectives other than Atsu's. Early prototyping started with other characters to prove the concept, but once the team playtested Jin, the decision was made: he had to arrive with his full moveset, all his stances, and his iconic sticky bomb.

That meant serious work. More than 60 of Jin's attack animations, most with their own kill animations, had to be retargeted to the new character rig, retouched and rebalanced for Yōtei's combat, with custom strafe animations for each stance to fit the new Focus Attack model. His perks lean into his classic feel, rewarding well-timed parries and following up his Quickfire with melee.

The visual side was just as careful. Jin's armor, largely still holding up from the original artist's work, was repainted with updated metal, leather and cloth, while his face and hair were rebuilt from the Tsushima textures so he reads as the same character beside Atsu at PS5 fidelity. His idle animations returned too, including the rarely seen bird-hold idle in the character select menu, inspired by the moment Jin first recovers the storm blade.

Audio got the same treatment: a new recording of Jin's theme on lap steel guitar, rebuilt movement sounds for his Ghost armor, his Heavenly Slash, Dance of Wrath and Ghost Stance pulled from the original assets, and Daisuke Tsuji back in the booth — with a few Jin lines even slipped into the main game. Most Wanted requires an internet connection, a PlayStation account, and patch v2.0 or later.
