Age of Wonders 4: The Silver Seas sails out with pirate cities and Sharkkin

Age of Wonders 4 is going to sea. The Silver Seas, the latest expansion for Triumph Studios' fantasy strategy game, is out now, and it is built almost entirely from player requests — pirates, sharks and floating cities included.

The heart of the expansion is the new Mercantile Culture, which lets players place cities at sea and turn them into floating fortresses to rule the waves. Two flavours of piracy shape how those empires grow: the Cartel, which grows through smuggling and secrecy, and the Barony, which uses lavish fortunes to place bounties on enemies and import whatever the empire needs.

Two new seafaring peoples join the roster, both rooted in community suggestions. The Sharkkin answer the players who always replied 'Sharks!' when asked what to add next, while the Aqualon began as a piece of concept art shared during the Eldritch Realms expansion that drew so many comments the team decided to develop them fully.

Beyond the piracy theme, the expansion adds a water-magic tome with ice magic as a natural progression, new Pirate Dwellings and pirate-themed stories, terrifying sea creatures to battle, and — because the team felt it was only right — a sea shanty. Triumph notes the game is now in its fourth year and fourth set of expansions, making it the longest-supported title in the franchise.
