What cookies GPN uses today
GPN is a public news site with no reader accounts. Today, a normal reader gets no tracking cookie and no advertising cookie from GPN itself, because no live ad code is running yet and no visitor tracking is used.
The cookies and local storage that do exist
- Site Manager session (owner only, after login):
gpn_session — an HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax cookie, 24-hour lifetime, set only when the site owner logs into /manager.html. Readers never receive it. It is not used for advertising or tracking.
- Cloudflare security cookies (when proxied): Cloudflare, which fronts gpncentral.com, may set short-lived security cookies to protect the site from bots and abuse. These are not GPN advertising cookies and are not used to build a reader profile.
- Your browser, not a cookie: your day/night theme choice, your consent choice, and any reaction/bookmark are stored in your own browser's local storage, not sent to GPN as a cookie. Clearing site data in your browser removes them.
- Third-party embeds and links: a YouTube or other official video embed, or a link you click to a publisher, may set that third party's own cookies under that party's policy. GPN does not control them.
What will change before live ads
GPN now shows a consent banner on your first visit. Essential cookies always run; analytics and advertising cookies run only if you accept them, and you can change your choice anytime via “Cookie settings” in the footer bar. No live network ad code runs today. When Google AdSense goes live, it may set advertising cookies such as IDE (ad personalization and measurement) and preference/security cookies such as NID, and this page will name any further categories if they appear.
How to control cookies
- Use “Cookie settings” in the footer bar to change your analytics and advertising choices without clearing anything else.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings — the public site will still read normally without a manager session cookie (the manager will simply ask you to log in again, which only the owner does).
- Use your browser's “clear site data” for gpncentral.com to remove local storage (theme, bookmarks).
- For questions about cookies or privacy, use the Support page, and see the Privacy Policy.
